The company’s restaurant brands – KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell – are the global leaders of the chicken, pizza and Mexican-style food categories. Worldwide, the Yum! Brands system opens over six new restaurants per day on average, making it a leader in global retail development.
The Kentucky Fried Chicken concept was introduced to Britain in 1965 when the first store opened in Preston. Since then KFC (GB) has expanded its UK & Ireland restaurant network to its current level of over 850 locations, some company operated and some franchised. The achievement of excellent restaurant standards has resulted in the British operation acting as a training base for many of the new KFC restaurants operating throughout Europe. KFC UK continues to grow as a brand, with strong sales and an expanding estate. Over the Past 10 years our total sales have almost doubled and KFC now have sales over £billion a year! We have bold ambitions to have over 1,000 stores in the UK and Ireland by 2020 and we are looking to build over 50 new stores a year.
Our Community Commitments
KFC is all about great food, great teams and great partnerships that help us to respond to local community needs and have a positive impact on the local economy. We want to be open and transparent about the contribution we make to communities through partnerships with local charities. We also have the Good Neighbour Guide which demonstrates our commitments to the local community.
KFC ADD HOPE FOUNDATION
The KFC Add Hope Foundation supports charities with a focus on education and skills development for vulnerable children, in the UK and overseas. We aim to help young people achieve their potential in a safe, supportive and caring environment, giving them the education and opportunities to develop important skills.
The Add Hope Foundation enables each KFC restaurant to support a local children’s charity, with 100% of funds raised going directly to the charity. Money is raised through product promotions (we donate 10p from every Kids’ Meal), scratch cards, donation boxes or through customers donating via their Colonel’s Club loyalty cards.
CHICKEN DONATION SCHEME
In May 2014, we created our Food Donation Scheme to donate unsold chicken from our restaurants to local charities. The chicken is carefully packaged and frozen so it can be stored until the charity can collect it. Collections take place at least twice a week. Our aim is to roll out the scheme to all of our UK and Irish restaurants by the end of 2017.
All KFC items are held on sale for a limited time only. If chicken is unsold when its time limit expires, it is withdrawn from sale and frozen so it can be donated to the Food Donation Scheme. Our aim is to reduce food waste to zero. All food that cannot be given to the Food Donation Scheme is now recycled as biodiesel and fertiliser.
WE OFFER CAREERS AND SKILLS ADVICE TO HOMELESS PEOPLE
We partner with Crisis, a charity for single homeless people, to offer careers advice and skills workshops.
WE CREATE JOBS AND BOOST THE LOCAL ECONOMY
A new KFC restaurant typically creates up to 50 jobs, with around two thirds of them going to people who live within two miles of the restaurant. During construction, a typical restaurant with a drive-thru facility will deliver approximately £2 million in local economic output. Each restaurant pays approximately £75,000 in business rates each year.
As a company, KFC UK and Ireland contributes approximately £500 million to the UK economy across our supply chain, with an estimated 80% of this generated within the UK.
